Plastering
A skim coat freshens up walls and ceilings that are sound but marked or uneven. Where the old plaster is blown, cracked or damp-damaged, it's better to take it back to the brick and start again. We'll tell you which your walls need.
Screeding
A screed is a smooth layer laid over a concrete floor to make it flat and level before the final floor goes down. It's the step that stops tiles cracking and laminate bouncing.
Common questions
How long until I can decorate new plaster?
Fresh plaster needs to dry fully first, which usually takes a few days for a skim and longer for thicker plaster. It turns from dark to an even light pink when it's ready. The first coat of paint should be a thinned mist coat.
How long does a screed take to dry?
A traditional sand and cement screed is often estimated at around a day per millimetre of thickness for the first 40mm, and longer after that. You can usually walk on it within a day or two, but the final floor shouldn't go down until it's dry.
