What fascias and soffits do
The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof that holds the gutter. The soffit is the board underneath that closes the gap to the wall. Together they keep rain, birds and pests out of the roof and support the guttering.

Common questions
Should old fascias be replaced or covered over?
